Planning Ahead
Choosing your own blood donor is a fundamental human right. These practices have been safe, legal, and widely accepted for decades. Supreme Court rulings and the clear protections of the U.S. Constitution—particularly the 14th Amendment, Section 1—uphold this personal liberty. Yet some blood donation centers and hospitals have quietly begun removing or restricting this option for Americans.
Urgent Blood Needs
Directed donations aren’t possible in true emergencies because testing and processing blood takes time. If you have a few days please complete our Urgent Blood Request form. There are possible alternatives: cell-saver during surgery or following Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Blood Policy. If neither of these options are available to you, please send us a Prayer Request for you or your loved one.
Requesting a Blood Donation
A request for blood donation can be made by members from their member dashboard. We help member’s navigate this process by confirming whether their hospital accepts directed donations, finding donor sites, estimating processing time, and provide a physician script that can be helpful when advocating for directed donations.
Finding the blood donor match
A request for blood donors goes out via text, email, and phone call to members who match the recipient’s blood type and who live close enough to donate. Members are only called to donate blood when these two criteria are met. We help donor’s navigate this process by locating their donation site and scheduling details.
Tracking Blood Donations & Screening Potential Members
Becoming a BBHB member requires all applicants to sign a covenant with God, affirming their commitment to honesty and to doing no harm to others.
Verification and Tracking Blood Donations
Each donation has a barcode linking the donor and the intended recipient. We ask our donors to send a photo of the barcode to us and we forward it to the recipient for confirmation. No names are included, only the barcode.
Screening Potential Members
Our membership application is detailed and asks questions that go well beyond what blood banks typically inquire about. While we are actively working to automate parts of our systems, the membership process is not one of them. If any concerns arise during review, our Membership Screening Team will reach out directly to verify the details.
